Abstract
Alteration minerals formed through the interaction of country rock and circulating hydrothermal fluids represent a permanent record of the temperature/pressure/flow conditions existing in a particular geothermal system prior to any disturbances caused by drilling and well testing. These minerals can be studied systematically in drill cutting both during and after perforation. Data from single wells can be used to direct the drilling program more effectively, whereas that from several wells permits the synthesis of a very detailed situation of the field. Numerous examples are given where subsequence development drilling has substantiated the model generated.
