Abstract
The magnetotelluric method of geophysical exploration uses naturally occurring time varying electromagnetic fields measured at the earths surface to determine deep electrical resistivity structure. The thus determined resistivity structure can correctly define the geometry of rock units having markedly differing water content, salinity, or temperature. Rocks with higher water content have lower resistivity. A les prevalent but important cause of change in rock resistivity is change the temperature or change in the saturating water's salinity. Clearly, the magnetotelluric (MT) technique is well suited for delimiting high temperature geothermal reservoirs.
