Abstract

An analysis of fluid flow while hydraulic fractures are closing, has been carried out to evaluate the created fracture volume based on vented fluid measured at the wellhead, Assuming that the flow rate from the fracture into the well is approximately equal to the vented fluid per unit time, fracture volumes have been estimated form the vented fluid measured after three hydraulic fracturing operations conducted at the YAKEDAKE hot, dry rock test site, in 1981. In the case where closed fractures were created and/or fluid loss through paths from eh injection well to other observation wells were not too much, the flow rate of vented fluid calculated from fracture volume was comparable with the measured vented fluid.
