Abstract
The 1980 annual EPRI survey of the electric utility industry forecast of geothermal generating capacity shows a continued expectation or rapid growth during the period from 1990 to 2000. Announced plans for geothermal capacity through 2000 has grown to over 3300 MW, with almost half of this capacity fueled from liquid dominated resources in the western United States. This announced capacity represents a significant increase form the 1977 EPRI survey of 1800 MW, most of which was the planned growth of the Geysers dry steam geothermal fields. The survey results are reinforced by data from the Western Systems Coordinating Council 10 year forecast. With successful demonstration of economic utilization of liquid dominated resources, the potential growth to an industry size in excess of 10,000 MW by 2000 is still a strong possibility.
