Investigation and Development of Geothermal Energy in New Zealand from 1978 to 1980

Abstract

The more significant aspects of the investigation and development of geothermal energy in New Zealand over the last two and a half years by the Ministry of Works and Development are reviewed. Twelve new wells in three separate fields are reported. Four different injection tests have been carried out at Broadlands and three are continuing with satisfactory results to date. Potential silica deposition problems from supersaturated geothermal water are being investigated. One well have been stimulated to accept a four fold increase in injection flow with little increase in wellhead pressure. Statutory processes for the Ohaki Power Station have been completed and construction approval for the first state of 100MW will need to be sought shortly to meet the October 1986 initial Commissioning date. The supply of steam to the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company mill has increase from 120 tonne/hr to 200 tonne/hr and is planned to 270 tonne/hr. Investigations are about to commence from the two new geothermal fields at Rushine Springs and Mokai.
