Abstract
The paper describes the successful development and evaluations of seals and lubricants for journal type rock bits for use in geothermal reservoirs. Elastomeric compounds which sealed effectively to temperatures of 288°C (550°F) and mechanical seals for reservoir temperatures over 288°C (550°F) are presented. Newly developed lubricants which meet both the compatibility and lubrication requirements are described. Several seals and lubricants are recommended for high temperature laboratory drilling and field geothermal drilling tests in rollercone bits.
