Abstract
Transient cooling of magmatic intrusion in a geothermal reservoir due to conduction and convection is studied. The effects of overlying cap rock and different horizontal and vertical permeability of the reservoir are considered. Results are compared to the data from Salton Sea Geothermal Field. It is also observed that multiple layers of convection cells exist when horizontal permeability is much larger than the vertical permeability. The sharp drop-off of surface heat flow observed at Salton Sea Geothermal field is confirmed by numerical results. Based on these numerical results, it is possible to speculate that the age of the instructive body is about 8,000 to 12,000 years.
