Abstract
Pore pressure reduction from fluid production may compact geothermal reservoir rock ineleastically and cause undesirable subsurface or surface effects. An experimental and analytical program has been started to determine reservoir rock behavior under simulated in situ conditions and pore pressure reduction, develop a theory of long term creep compaction, and draw conclusion concerning reservoir response to production. Geothermal areas under consideration are the Cerro Prieto Field in Mexico and the East Mesa Field in the United States. Preliminary hydrostatic results at room temperature and short durations indicate little inelastic compaction. High temperature, triaxial conditions and long term tests are currently underway and final results are quite likely to differ from these initial results.
