Abstract
Thermal conductivity measurements on representative core samples and direct measurement of the geothermal gradient in boreholes are being used to determine the nature of heat flow in Venango and Clarion Counties in northwestern Pennsylvania. In addition, basement rock samples from Bucks, Erie and Northampton Counties are undergoing analysis to determine their radiogenic heat production. Preliminary indications suggest that ground water in this area may serve as a readily available source of geothermal energy for at least the next 300 years.
