Abstract

Chemical geothermometry applied to thermal waters from springs and wells in the Midway, Utah area indicates that the reservoir temperature of the Midway thermal system probably does not exceed 75°C. Two models for the heat source have been developed, both of which infer a late Tertiary igneous intrusion. Thermal gradient data suggest an intrusion to the north of the hot springs area, with meteoric water being heated by the intrusion, flowing south along the flanks of the Park City Anticline, and being lead to the surface in Midway through a series of fractures or faults in the Weber Quartzite. Gravity data, on the other hand, suggest igneous intrusion directly beneath Midway as the heat source. In either case, the Midway thermal system is considered to be a low temperature resources, suitable for space heating purposes and perhaps other low temperature applications.
