Abstract
We examined the four year bonus bidding history for Federal geothermal leases compared with the longer history of bidding for Federal offshore oil and gas leases. Differences and similarities were found, the more interesting of the latter were: (1) the standard deviation of bids for a lease appeared to about the same for both types of lease, and (2) the fraction of money left on the table was almost exactly the same. These similarities arose even though offshore oil and gas lease bids were orders of magnitude higher than geothermal bids.
