Abstract
Gases in geothermal fluids may limit the exploitation of the resource by their effects on two phase flow or their effect on scale formation. Fundamental theory is available to predict these effects, but data are limited except in the case of CO2, and wide discrepancies are found even the case of CO2. The effect of dissolved salts on solubilities has been studied only with CO2. From the known data, certain predictions can be made on such questions as the appearance of the vapor phase in flashing wells, and the onset of calcite deposition as a result of CO2 release.
