Abstract

The economic potential of a geothermal resource is a function of many variables but is frequently, and sometimes erroneously, judged according to reservoir temperature. Quantative computations of ideal work as a function of flow rate, resource temperature, condensing temperature and reinjection temperature show that well productivity (flow rate) and condensing temperature variations within the typical ranges of geothermal resources can be more important economic discriminators than resource temperature. Bothe thermodynamics and economics dictate advantages for low condensing temperature whereas the effects oppose with regard to reinjection temperature. Reinjection temperatures greater tan 160.F will typically constitute the economically preferred value.
