Abstract

Geothermal Development Company (GDC) was formed to fast track the development of geothermal resources in Kenya and so far has drilled five geothermal wells in the Menengai field. GDC uses own downhole tools and human resource to carry out downhole measurements. The aim and purpose of logging a geothermal well is to establish the reservoir conditions in terms of temperature and pressure. This paper aims to compare the use of both electronic and mechanical downhole logging tools and emphasize the need for GDC to apply the use of electronic logging in its operations. GDC operates in a high temperature and high pressure geothermal field and uses the clock driven Kuster tools for its downhole measurements, the accuracy and resolution of these tools is limited. It is in the light of these limitations that GDC is in the process of acquiring Kuster electronic tool (K10 geothermal PTS surface readout) that will enhance acquisition of high resolution data and improve the speed of data interpretation to ensure accurate assessment of the geothermal field.
