[Ormat, USA]
For the last three years Ormat has been undertaking small diameter exploration well drilling in the United States as part of a ramp-up in exploration activities. This paper will discuss the key learnings from the implementation of this drilling campaign and how it has impacted the exploration strategy. The use of small diameter exploration well drilling has had benefits that include, but are not limited to: (1) reducing walk away costs, (2) increasing conceptual model understanding ahead of full-size exploration drilling, through data gains in temperature, volume, structures, lithology and permeability (3) acting as monitoring wells with observations made during the drilling of full-size wells, when undertaking full-size well testing and during long-term testing, and, (4) allowing numerical models to commence construction earlier
