From Oil and Gas to Geothermal: Selecting Proppants for High-Temperature, High-Stress Conditions

Dina GOLOSHCHAPOVA, Benjamin ELDRED

[Carbo, USA]

This paper will highlight a comprehensive evaluation of proppants for geothermal applications, focusing on their ability to withstand the extreme temperatures and stresses encountered in geothermal completions. Rigorous internal and external testing was conducted to determine how existing oil and gas proppants perform under geothermal conditions. External testing was also carried out through collaborations with leading commercial laboratories and universities, ensuring independent validation and a wide range of perspectives. To capture the complexities of geothermal environments, both established and newly developed test methodologies were applied, using specialized equipment to replicate reservoir conditions as closely as possible. The paper will provide an overview of the testing program, share key results, and present recommendations for proppant selection tailored to geothermal wells, balancing conductivity, durability, and transport performance.
