The Kauffman Gold Medal is awarded to a person who, in the unanimous opinion of the Honors and Awards Committee and the Executive Committee, has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the science of geophysical exploration as manifested during the previous five years. Mike Batzle and Zhijing (Zee) Wang were honored with the Virgil Kauffman Gold Medal by the SEG in 2002 for their original and continued development of the petrophysical transforms that estimate the elastic properties of pore -fluid saturants. The work of Mike and Zee is an integral part of today's fluid-substitution techniques that are employed in all seismic amplitude and AVO interpretations. |
