Big City Mountaineers Trip ‘09: This year, we took 5 teens from Oakland to the Ansel Adams Wilderness for a 5-day backpacking trip from June 26 to August 1 along the Lillian Lake loop, a 19 mile trek. We hiked each day for anywhere from 3-6 hours and set-up camp in a different location every night. Although the mosquitoes were bad, we were able to get respite from them by swimming in the beautiful alpine lakes. Each teen took on a role on the trail during each new day as either the Scout, the Sweep, the Encourager, the Cook, and the Scribe. The most coveted job was the Scout, who lead each day and learned map and compass reading skills. I'm constantly amazed at the profound impact this trip has on the girls. Every year I hear comments about how quiet it is in the woods and how safe they feel. They all struggle so much the first day with their packs and hiking with the heavy load, but by the third day, they look like naturals in their packs and by the fifth day, they are scheming on how to go backpacking again sometime soon. Some of the main lessons the girls learn are about personal responsibility, Leave No Trace ethics, respectful communication and how to persevere through tough challenges. Please take some time to check out the pictures I've posted on Picasa under BCM 2009. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call or email. I'm more than happy to tell you more about the trip or about Big City Mountaineers and the volunteer opportunities available with them.
