Education and Academic Qualifications

2006 to present                      Stanford University, Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences
PhD Geology - Currently in the 4th year of study

2002 to 2006                           University of Liverpool, Department of Earth Sciences.

Current Research

Ph.D. Project - Current research interests include fault structures and the interactions of veins and pressure solutions in zones of regional deformation. Currently, I am working on a field sites on the west and south coasts of Ireland where these features are present in a variety of clastic units.

M.E.Sci. Geology Project – The style, extent and physical properties of soft sediment deformation surrounding juvenile fault zones. This project was to identify the style of deformation in relatively young fault zones and its effect on permeability and porosity in soft sediments. Detailed structural mapping was completed in order to analyse the lineation and samples were taken for thin section analysis. Experimental soft sediment deformation using a low-pressure tri-axial deformation apparatus will provide data to correlate porosity with hydrostatic and differential stress. This project was supervised by Dan Faulkner and Dave Hodgson, based in the Rock Deformation Lab, Liverpool Earth Science Department. This work was presented in poster form at TSG 2006 in Manchester.

Awards/Grants

2008 – McGee grant - $3050 towords field work to investigate the role of pressure solution seams in the formation of strike-slip fault zones in Ireland.
2007 – Levorsen grant - $2000 towards field work to investigate vein and pressure solution arrays in Ireland.
2006 – The Newall Prize for ‘Overall excellence in Geology on the F601 degree programme’.
2006 - Nominated for the Dave Johnston Undergraduate Mapping Prize at the 2006 Geological Society of London Tectonic Studies Group conference, Manchester UK.
2005 - Exxon Mobil fieldwork award – £500 towards 4th year project fieldwork (see section 5 for details).
