The Stanford Challenge Message from Dean Matson Volunteer Terry Huffington Earth Sciences Priorities Giving Opportunities Case Statement Earth Sciences Priorities Petroleum Investments Fund Endowed Professorships and Directorships		The Stanford Challenge Case Statement Many of today's environment and resource issues are complex and multifaceted, and will no longer yield to disciplinary perspectives alone. Innovative and collaborative work at the crossroads of disciplines holds great promise, yet such approaches challenge the traditional institutional structure of most universities. Stanford's Initiative on the Environment and Sustainability brings together scholars from every corner of campus to collaborate in new and evolving ways to create, integrate, and transform our fundamental understanding of Earth processes, and use that knowledge to help provide energy, water, and a safe and sustainable planet. Through the seamless integration of multiple disciplines, perspectives, and scientific languages, we seek to address some of the greatest challenges we face today: How to meet the energy demands of societies worldwide in a way that is environmentally benign; How to sustain living and farming environments without destroying the natural assets that support them; How to preserve the health of our oceans and coastal environments; How to maintain freshwater resources and continue to provide water to growing populations around the world.
