Justin Brown

Title:Graduate Student, Department of Geophysics
Primary Affiliation:Department of Geophysics
Office Location:Mitchell Bldg  453A
E-mail:jrbrown5@stanford.edu

Research

Justin's PhD research is focused on earthquake and volcano seismology problems. Currently, Justin studies deep tectonic tremor of circum-Pacific subduction zones and the relationship to plate boundary seismicity. He has developed a running autocorrelation technique to discover small, slow rupturing low frequency earthquakes in the deep extension of the plate interface- an area previously considered aseismic. His technique has been successfully applied to subduction zones in SW Japan, Cascadia, Alaska, and Costa Rica in addition to locating the tiny "tremors" at high precision. More recently Justn has extended his study to faults in southern California. Other research interests include: volcano seismicity prior to eruptions, signal processing techniques in both time and frequency domains, high precision earthquake location, local earthquake tomography, reservoir seismicity, and aftershock sequence cataloging. Having lobbied on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on several occasions since 2004, Justin is an advocate for minority participation in the STEM fields at the national level.

Teaching

Justin has served as a teaching assistant for the graduate course on earthquake seismology. He has also led field trips in the Los Trancos/Montebello Reserve Area where students can learn about the San Andreas fault.

Professional Activities

Justin has served on several university committees including the Registrar's Student Advisory Board, Graduate Community Center Operations Committee, Graduate Student Programming Board, and Funding Committee. He has also served as the School of Earth Sciences Representative to the Graduate Student Council, and currently holds an At-Large Representative position.
