Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Program


(1) International cooperative projects: Since teaching at Stanford in 1972, I have successfully carried out several international scientific projects supported by NSF, Guggenheim, Center of Global Partnership in Japan, Center of Research & Development Fund. The NSF projects included US-Taiwan(75-80), US-China (86-present), US-Japan (80-84), and US-Russian (92-96; 01-04; CRDF) projects. The results were published in many scientific papers and in several edited books (e.g., Coleman-Wang, 95: UHP Metamorphism; Hacker-Liou, 98: When Continents Collide: Geodynamics and Geochemistry of Ultrahigh-Pressure Rocks; Parkinson, Liou, et al., 02. The diamond-bearing Kokchetav Massif).

(2) Chair or Co-Chair of Task Group III-6 (1994-1998) and Task Group III-8 (1999-2004) on UHP Metamorphism and Continent Collision supported by Int'l Lithosphere Program. Task Group workshop was held each year: the first at Stanford in 1994 and others in conjunction with Int'l Geology Congress, and Int'l Eclogite Conference and Field Conference. We published special issues in Island Arc, Journal of Metamorphic Geology, Lithos and International Geology Review. For example, 5 special UHP sessions occurred at the IGC in Florence in 2004 and Hacker and I were invited to prepare a GSA special paper resulted from these symposia.

(3) I was invited to write articles in Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, McGraw-Hill (Glaucophane in 2001, Ophiolite in 2001), in Encyclopedia of Physical Sciences and Technology (UHP Metamorphic Rocks in 2002), Perspective in Science (Seeing Mountain Through a grain of garnet, 1997; Into the Forbidden Zone, 2000), Treatise in Geochemistry in 2003 and MSA short course on UHP Minerals in 1998 and Epidote Group Minerals in 2004.

(4) I am currently an Associate editor for Amer. Mineralogist, Island Arc, Int'l Geology Review, Episodes and several Chinese journals. During last 3 years, I was invited speaker at Workshop on Subduction-collision processes at Universitt Potsdam (02), at Superplume workshop at Tokyo Institute of Technology (02), at the Croucher Advanced Study Institute on Tectonic Processes in the Evolution of China (02), Umbgrove Lecture UHP metamorphism and continent subduction/collision at Universiteit Utrecht (03), UHP metamorphism and Continent collision in many institutes in China and Taiwan (02-04).

(5) In last 5 years, I taught undergraduate courses in Earth Materials, Igneous & Metamorphic Processes and graduates in Metamorphic Petrology and Seminar in Metamorphic Processes. Supervise graduates, post-docs and research associates for research and work together with many visitors (Carswell, Maruyama, Rumble, Xu, Yang, other Chinese and Japanese visitors). I serve as Stanford freshman and sophomore advisor. I co-chaired the World Chinese Geologist Association and organized the 2nd Int'l World Chinese Geologist Congress at Stanford in 2002. I led field trip for IMA in 1986 and IGC in 2000 and many international visitors to Franciscan blueschist/eclogite of California. I led field trip for K-12 students to visit eclogite blocks in serpentinite in Tiburon.
