The Shared Field Measurement Facility’s primary aim is to provide support, education and technical expertise to members of the Stanford community interested in or needing to conduct field based research or teaching. The facility houses a range of geophysical, GPS, and surveying instruments, as well as field computer options for data logging or mapping that are available to users. The facility will maintain, calibrate, and service these instruments as needed to keep them in a field ready status. Several levels of service will be provided with these instruments. The level of service will depend on the user’s prior experience of using the various instruments. For example experienced users may only wish for a loan of the equipment similar to what a rental company would provide. Other users may prefer to be provided with a full service arrangement where the facility manager will be deployed with the instrument to acquire the data and perform all processing and presentation of the results in a specified format. The level of service would be decided upon in preliminary consultations, where the user’s needs and experience can be assessed, and possible solutions advanced and implemented.
The Shared Field Measurement Facility is based in the Mitchell Building of the School of Earth Sciences; with office space in B77 and an equipment storage, maintenance, and preparation area in B17 (both in the basement level of the Mitchell Building). All enquiries regarding the operation and management of the facility should be directed to Nigel Crook
