Owens Valley is the westernmost valley of the Basin and Range Province and quite striking. On the east side of the valley lie the fault-bound Inyo Mountains, while the west side is bounded by the Sierra Nevada, towering to over 14,000' high. The comparison between these two mountain chains show the difference between mountains carved by glaciers (the Sierra) and mountains that are not (the Inyo). On the north end of Owens Valley is where basalt cinder cones and basaltic lava flows erupted along the Sierra frontal fault scarp. |
