Achievement Guide

The MARVE web activity keeps track of the user activity, and if so desired, can provide some measure of achievement. Teachers may required you to print out your achievement certificate for class credit. This is not required for using MARVE. Your exploration should be focused on 4 activities: Exploration, Observing (actual video from the seafloor) Mapping, , and collecting a water sample. There are two levels of achievement; Basic and Advanced Achievement. The table below describes the quality and quantity of the activities are required for each achievement level.

You can preview your achievement level by pressing the disk icon. To get to the certificate click on the surface button (lower left corner)

Exploring: The MARVE area has 20 locations that you can take a view the area in 360-degree panorama. (Pink dots on your map). You can rotate and tilt your view using the sub controls, or by pressing the mouse on the view port.

Observing: As you explore the area, you will find different objects, like hydrothermal vents (black smokers), deep sea animals, unusual geologic formations. You can click on these objects, and a video will appear in the porthole of your submarine. (if you don’t want to see the video or other viewing problems, hit the Release button; hit replay to replay the video)
View 5 different videos view 10 videos, at least 3 of geological features (vents, lava) and 3 of fauna
Mapping: As you travel around you may keep track of what you see and where you see it with the map (right side of the screen). To map, drag and drop icons from the cubby holes above the clipboard down to the Alvin icon on the map. Icons are moveable, and you can drop them in the trash if you want to get rid of them. (you are limited to 24 icons).

Sampling: At the hydrothermal vents you can take a water sample. You can also analyze the sample right there in the sub. (not possible in the real world). Notice the water temperature. These vents are hot! Take 1 sample Take 1 sampe from each of the 2 vent sites
You can preview your achievement level by pressing the disk icon. To get to the certificate click on the surface button (lower left corner)
Print button. This will print the whole screen when in map mode. When in the Notes tab or Water tab from the clipboard is showing, this will print the table shown on the screen. Clicking this icon does not save your work, instead it evaluates your activity. It will notify you if you have completed the tasks for basic or advanced achievement Clicking this icon exits the explorer. It will notify you if you have completed the tasks for basic or advanced achievement and then you can print your certificate of exploration
