Step by Step Guide


1) Read through the introductory pages, click on the “continue” button to get the next page
 
2) Travel to the Study Area (the East Pacific Rise (at 9°50’N and 104°W)
 
3) Arrive on the seafloor. You are in the Northwest corner of the study area. Notice the map on the right side of the screen. It is a map that shows where you are relative to the study area. The Alvin icon spins as you view changes so you can your “look direction” from that.
You may need to let the virtual world download so take a minute to look around the sub controls
4) The first location you come to is on the wall of the Axial Summit Collapse (ASC) zone. The ASC gets its name from: axial—we are on the very boundary between tectonic plates, and it is often referred to as the “axis of seafloor spreading”; summit, we are on the shallowest part of the mid-ocean ridge; collapse, the region has steep walls that result from volcanic collapse.

5) Turn the joy stick just a little to left. The “jump” button will illuminate. You should be facing East-NorthEast. Click the jump the button. You will travel down to the next location on the floor of the collapse zone.
6) Take a look around, and aim south, click the jump button when illuminated. Notice as you travel and click on videos, a description appears in the video monitor. These descriptions are all kept in your note book, click on the Notes tab of the clip board.
7) Take a look around, and aim east, you should see the hydrothermal vent site in the distance. Click the jump button when illuminated
 
8) You’ve found your first vent site!. Click on the different animals in the scene to see actual videos of the animals and vent system on the seafloor. If you want to see the video again, click the replay button.
 
9) You can travel around the vent and the animals and smoke and vent in the different locations will bring up different videos. Keep track of what you see, on your map, by dragging a vent icon from the cubby holes above the map, down to the front of the Alvin.
10) Take a water sample. Click the “water sample” toggle button, to bring up the sampling apparatus. When ready, click and drag the water bottle from the middle to the left bottle holder. Them sample should start automatically when you release the mouse. When finished the results of the water sample will be printed as table. Note the temperature of the Vent!
