 Marine Virtual Explorer
The Marine Virtual Explorer is a CD or web-based activity that allows the user to explore hydrothermal vent fields on the East Pacific Rise as if you are inside the research submarine, Alvin. The overview movie is a 2 minute animated tour of the MARVE study area. The tour follows the ALVIN submersible as it discovers 2 areas of hydrothermal activity. As you watch this movie, notice the overall shape of the area. The height of the seafloor falls into two ranges, (high on the falls, low on the floor of caldera/graben structure).
The narrow region of the low elevation, is the actual width of the active volcanic area; outside that area little or no volcanic activity occurs.
