Three SPE Presidents, three Stanford School of Earth Sciences PhDs

The School of Earth Sciences is pleased to announce the recent nomination of William M. Cobb (’71, Petroleum Engineering) to be the 2008 President of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). Cobb is the third consecutive nominee holding a Ph.D. from the Stanford School of Earth Sciences to be named President of SPE. Preceding him is 2007 President Abdul-Jaleel Al-Khalifa (’88, Petroleum Engineering) and 2006 President Eve Sprunt (’77, Geophysics).
Cobb currently heads the petroleum consulting firm William M. Cobb & Associates, Inc., specializing in waterflooding, fluid injection, field studies, reserves evaluation and certification, and reservoir management. He also holds a position as adjunct professor of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University. While working towards his Ph.D. at Stanford, Cobb was advised by Dr. Henry J. Ramey, Jr. in the Department of Petroleum Engineering (now Energy Resources Engineering).
Al-Khalifa is Manager of the Reservoir Description and Simulation Department at Saudi Aramco. He also is the EAGE Distinguished Lecturer and is on the advisory board for the Stanford School of Earth Sciences and the King Fahd University of Petroleum Engineering, among other schools. During his time at Stanford, Al-Khalifa was co-advised by Khalid Aziz and Roland Horne in the Department of Petroleum Engineering.
Eve Sprunt is Senior Technical Advisor for Chevron Technology Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of Chevron Corp. that manages Chevron’s research, venture investing and business ventures in emerging energy technologies such as hydrogen, wind, solar, and biomass. Sprunt is also a Visiting Professor at Xian Shiyou University in China. At Stanford, Sprunt was advised by Dr. Amos Nur in the Department of Geophysics.
