What is the Stanford Alpine Project?

The Stanford Alpine Project (SAP) is a student-run organization affiliated with the Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) at Stanford University. We are based in the School of Earth Sciences, which includes the Department of Geological & Environmental Sciences, Department of Geophysics, Environmental Earth System Science and Energy Resources Engineering.

The aim of SAP is to introduce students interested in Earth Sciences to spectacular geologic locations around the world. This is accomplished by the organization of biennial field trips motivated by a geology theme. Each field trip is of two to three weeks in duration and involves a detailed itinerary that introduces participants to the geology of the area being visited. Each day is spent visiting geologic outcrops and interacting with local geologic experts. In fact, the ultimate goal is to find a local geologist to lead each day of the field trip to permit the greatest understanding of the geology as possible.

Each field trip is conceived, organized and implemented by the students themselves. This is a considerable undertaking, and generally involves a two year planning period. There are many facets of the trip that need to be organized, including fundraising, logistical preparations, and itinerary development. The participants have to familiarize themselves with the geology of the planned trip location in order that all the important geology sites are included in the itinerary. Much effort is then put into communicating with local geologists to see if they can guide us for a portion of the trip. Fundraising is a crucial aspect of trip planning. The aim of SAP is to subsidize the cost per person to the greatest extent possible. In this way, Earth Science students are afforded the opportunity to visit a geologic location in the world that they otherwise may never have the chance to visit.

Since its inception in 1989, SAP has built an excellent reputation in the School of Earth Sciences, and has organized seven extremely successful trips. SAP is open to all students of Stanford University, although students with a background in Earth Sciences would find the trips most beneficial.

Support

How can YOU help the project? In order for the SAP trips to be possible, we need your help. We need your donations to the project so that the trips can be adequately subsidized for students. Alternatively, we are always in need of outside expertise if you can offer assistance in that regard, in the form of geologic guides or information for example. Please contact us if you would like more information about how you can interact with us and contribute to the success of these projects.

We also organize the annual SAP Chili Cook Off fundraiser. The Chili Cook Off event provides an opportunity to show off your chili-cooking prowess, taste a wide variety of excellent chilis, and relax in a comfortable environment with other faculty, staff, students, etc. The November 2008 Chili Cook Off was a big success! Pictures are coming soon. Check out the pictures from the 2005 SAP Chili Cook Off.

SAP organized a Pi Day Celebration for the School of Earth Sciences and Stanford community on March 13, 2009. Keep an eye out in 2010 for another pie baking extravaganza! Thanks to all who made Pi Day 2009 a big success!
