Software status for Spring Quarter, 2012

The first table shows applications installed just for the current quarter. These will be removed at the end of the quarter, unless requested again for a course in the following quarter.

The remaining tables show applications that are maintained every quarter as part of the standard set. These are generally updated with patches or new versions at the beginning of every quarter.

All PCs in the lab have identical software, but some programs have licenses that limit the number of simultaneous users (shown in parentheses). We are running the 64 bit edition of Windows 7 and preferentially install 64 bit versions of applications when available so they can use all the RAM in the computer.

These labels show how software is installed under each operating system:

  • LOCAL - This application is locally installed on the system disk. Run these applications in the normal way from the Start menu in Windows or the Applications folder in Mac OS X.

  • SHARE - lesser used Windows applications, those needed for only one course, and 32 bit applications that do not run natively under 64 bit Windows 7 are generally installed on a file share on the sesfs.stanford.edu file server that is auto-mounted as drive W:. VMware's "ThinApp" virtualization technology is used to wrap these applications so they will run correctly when stored on the server. Run these applications by opening the W: drive or the a65winapps shortcut on the desktop and double-clicking the application icon.
