Data Storage

Last revision November 29, 2011

The lab PCs automatically access the special "a65" network file share on the School's high performance file server, sesfs.stanford.edu, where a separate folder is created for each user with a 10 Gigabyte quota. Documents saved to the "Documents" folder and "Desktop" under either Windows or Mac OS X are stored in the user's folder on the server and can be accessed from either OS on any computer in the lab. This "a65" file share can be accessed only from the A65 lab computers.

User settings, such as creating bookmarks in a browser, are only stored in the user's local profile on that particular computer. The "Documents" folder on the file server is shared between Windows and Mac OS X; the "Desktop" for each operating system is stored separately. So to use the same files on both operating systems, put them into your "Documents" folder.

The "a65classdata" file share on sesfs.stanford.edu is also mounted automatically in read-only mode, with a shortcut on the Desktop. Instructors may obtain access to put files there for distribution to their students by contacting the A-65 lab management.

Each PC also has a 50 GB "scratch" disk partition. Any user may save files there for the duration of the academic quarter, but their integrity is not guaranteed.

All user files saved on the server or on the scratch disk will be erased during the break after the quarter ends.

See the lab FAQ for more information on user file storage.
