4. Secure your computer against hackers

Basic security checks, settings, and software installations are completed on Windows and Macintosh computers through the Stanford Computer Health Check Tool run as part of the network self-registration process. Or, our CRC support consultants have completed equivalent steps on computers they setup.

Unix and Linux managers should disable any unneeded services. Contact Kai Lanz for help securing Unix and Linux systems.

No computer will stay secure unless you maintain it! You must install operating system and application patches as they become available. Always use strong passwords for all accounts and services on your computer. You must also be wary about visiting the "disreputable" parts of the Internet, where malicious software can lurk on web pages or in file-sharing systems.
