Renewing DHCP leases for legacy operating systems.

This page describes how to renew a DHCP lease on certain older operating systems that are no longer supported on the School of Earth Sciences network. Please note that older versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system are not even allowed on the Earth Sciences network because they have serious security flaws that will never be fixed.

Mac OS 8 or 9

  • Open the TCP/IP control panel.
  • Change the configuration to Manual Address. Do not make any other changes.
  • Now change the configuration back to DHCP.
  • Close the TCP/IP control panel. If you are prompted to save the new configuration, click OK.

Windows NT

  • Open a command prompt window (Select Run from the Start menu, then type in cmd and press the RETURN key).
  • In the command prompt window, type this command (don't forget to press the RETURN key):

    ipconfig /release

  • Now, type this command:

    ipconfig /renew

  • Close the command prompt window.

Windows 95, 98, or ME

  • Select Run from the Start menu, then type in winipcfg and press the RETURN key).
  • In the winipcfg window, click on the Release all button.
  • Now click on the Renew all button.
  • Close the winipcfg window.
