Email service at Stanford and on pangea

Last revision August 16, 2007

People with a full-service SUNet ID have a Stanford email account on the ITS central email servers. All regular faculty, students, and staff are eligible for a full-service SUNet ID. For a fee, guests can be sponsored for a full-service SUNet ID. The free "base-level" sponsored SUNet ID allows guests to authenticate to university network services, but does not provide a Stanford email account.

Your Stanford email address is

      sunetid@stanford.edu.

where sunetid is your SUNet ID account name.

For 24 years, the School of Earth Sciences maintained its own email servers, using the name "pangea.stanford.edu" since 1990. This proud tradition began when Earth Sciences was one of the first units on campus to get connected to the Internet and we had to provide all services for ourselves.

In order to save limited staff time and finances for more important IT services, we are phasing out email service on pangea. Email is a commodity service readily available at the central campus level and from outside providers.

Local email service for existing pangea accounts ends on November 1, 2007. New accounts created since July, 2007, do not have any local email service at all. Everyone using an @pangea.stanford.edu email address must switch to another email account by November 1.

Email received by pangea after November 1 will be forwarded to the user's new email address until July 1, 2008, in order to give the user time to update all his correspondents with the new address.

Please note that we are only ending email services on pangea. Other services accessed with your pangea account will continue, such as file storage and web hosting.

See this web page for complete information about the phaseout of email service on pangea, including instructions for switching to a new email account, enabling forwarding, and transferring saved email from pangea.

Until you have switched to an outside email account, the following web pages still apply to email use on pangea:

You may need to send a message to a large group in the School. You can use the School messaging system or events calendar, or generate an email list from the personnel directory.
