Communicating Ocean Sciences

Elementary students at Escondido Elementary School on the Stanford Campus have been getting a little extra ocean sciences. Students from Communicating Sciences (GES 218) teach ocean sciences lessons in classrooms for 6 weeks. Stanford students who are interested in improving their ability to communicate their scientific knowledge are able to practice in this local school. The course combines instruction in inquiry-based science teaching methods with six weeks of supervised teaching in one classroom. Students will practice communicating scientific knowledge, and receive mentoring on how to improve their presentations. This course is taught by Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Saltzman

Crayfish Investigations: What is Inquiry? How to design an activity where students can investigate their own question about this living animal?
Float and Sink: How do you lead a discussion with young children? We practiced writing questions to test next week when "expert" questioners (school kids) come to Stanford.
Plankton Races: How to relate the basic principles to applied systems? Here Stanford students design plankton with household products to float, and not sink.
