Stanford University School of Earth Science

Community

The Stanford School of Earth Sciences recognizes the need and takes seriously its responsibility to share our understanding of the Earth with the greater community. Consequently, we offer programs for K-12 students, their teachers, and the general public.

We aim to bring a basic knowledge of Earth sciences to as many people as possible. From GeoKids, in which first-graders get to know rocks, minerals, fossils, and soils through hands-on activities, to our public lectures aimed at interested, non-expert citizens who wish to be better informed about issues of current importance, we hope to engage everyone in the Earth sciences. For teachers of older students, we offer check-out kits and workshops to supplement science curriculum and strengthen teacher confidence when presenting scientific material.

Sustainable Choices Card
Sustainable Choices Card
Small choices we make every day affect the health of the planet we share. The Sustainable Choices Card provides information you can use to make small changes that will have a major positive impact on our environment. The card will be available at Reunion Homecoming weekend and at various locations around campus. To get more information or to download a copy, visit the Sustainable Choices website.
Quake-Catcher Network
The Quake-Catcher Network is a collaborative initiative for developing the world's largest, low-cost seismic network by utilizing sensors in and attached to internet-connected computers. With your help, the Quake-Catcher Network can provide better understanding of earthquakes, give early warning to schools, emergency response systems, and others. The Quake-Catcher Network also provides educational software designed to help teach about earthquakes and earthquake hazards. To join the network and learn more about earthquake science, go to the Quake-Catcher Network website.
