Adam Millard-Ball

Adam Millard-Ball came to IPER after eight years as an urban planner, researcher and journalist, specializing in programs to reduce traffic and automobile dependence. His research interests focus on the effectiveness of city climate plans and other municipal policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and how the design of carbon trading programs can best incorporate transportation. He is a David and Lucile Packard Foundation Stanford Graduate Fellow.

As a principal at San Francisco-based consulting firm Nelson\Nygaard, Adam led transit-oriented development, parking policy and Smart Growth projects on both East and West coasts, and served as Principal Investigator for a major Transportation Research Board study on car-sharing. His international experience includes a stint as as a transportation policy journalist in London; transportation planning in Mexico City and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; and an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development roundtable on taxi regulation.

Adam's environmental interests stem from his work as a high school volunteer on water quality monitoring with Friends of the Earth. Since then, he has volunteered or consulted for numerous planning and public health nonprofits, working on diverse issues from taxi regulation to nuclear energy to HIV/AIDS services. He currently serves as a Board member of Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association in San Francisco.

Adam has published in peer-reviewed journals such as Urban Studies and Housing Studies, and writes regularly on climate change and transportation policy for Planning, the magazine of the American Planning Association. He led the transportation planning for American Planning Association award-winning plans in New Jersey and California, and received the "Young Researcher" award from the National Center for Transportation Research for his work on car-sharing. He holds an M.A. in Geography from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. View a list of publications
