Call for proposals for Rudolf Summer Grants

Due April 28, 2008 by 5:00 pm

Please submit a hard copy with required signatures to Danielle Nelson and also send an electronic version to nelsondn@stanford.edu

Thanks to the generosity of George Rudolf and the School of Earth Sciences, IPER is able to provide modest summer grants to students in need of supplementary funding for research and research-related travel expenses.  Since IPER has limited funds to distribute, we expect you will seek support from your faculty advisors and other fellowship sources, including the McGee and Levorsen funds available in the School of Earth Sciences, if you are still eligible (information distributed to SES student list serv by Roni Holeton on 03/20/08).  As you plan your summer, please take the opportunity to talk with faculty about your plans and see if they have or know of available funds.  Any external or supplementary funds you have or anticipate having for summer research expenses should be listed in your proposal.

The Rudolf Summer Grant is intended to support, in part, summer research activities such as travel, field expenses, supplies, equipment, and other expenses directly related to research that advances you towards your degree.  A formal proposal following the guidelines below is required. Because Rudolf funds are limited, and we hope to award funds to as many students as possible, most awards will be in the amount of $3000 or less. The method of disbursement will be described in the award letter.

Because all IPER students receive a summer quarter stipend (at the same level as the academic quarter), your summer research proposal should not include regular, daily living expenses that would normally be covered by your stipend, such as cell phones, Internet access, rent, food, maintenance of a car, etc. Such expenses in your proposal, unless required exclusively by your research, will not be considered.

Recognizing that when you are traveling by plane, car, train, etc. you may incur expenses that exceed your regular living costs and put a strain on your stipend, “meals and incidental expenses” will be allowed on travel days only, at the mid-point of the US Government rate:  $52/day (see www.gsa.gov/mie).  Lodging or other extraneous expenses on travel days may be included and justified as a separate line item.

We encourage you to consult with staff ahead of time if you have questions about whether a particular expense is allowable, or any other questions about the proposal process.

Please note that a written report detailing how you used the Rudolf Summer Grant, the results/outcomes, next steps and any significant budget deviation will be required. A request for this will be sent in Autumn Quarter 2008.

Proposal Guidelines (Sections A-D):

A. Cover page, IRB Approval and Signatures. This required form can be downloaded HERE. The completed form should serve as the cover page to your proposal. Note: The electronic version of your proposal should include the cover page, but does not require signatures.

B.  Core proposal.  Please tell us what you propose to do this summer, in 2 pages max (single-spaced).  Your content should include the following:

1.  A proposal title.

2.  A central, overarching question.  State the main question or problem that frames your proposed work.  While your summer’s work will necessarily be limited in scope, the overarching question should be stated in a way that reflects the broad significance of your research.

3.  Background.  A brief review of what’s been done before, with reference to the literature (~5-10 references).

4.  Your approach and methods. Briefly describe the project design and location, the data collection and analysis methods you plan to employ, and how and where you will gather the information.

5.  Results.  Indicate how this research will contribute to planning or conducting your dissertation research.

6.  Faculty Sponsors Collaborators.  Please list your two primary Stanford faculty advisors (First Year Advisors, Lead Advisors, etc.) at this time and state their involvement in the planning or implementation of your proposed research. Also note any individuals, universities, or other organizations you plan to collaborate with or whose resources (space, field sites, research assistants) you might use in conducting this research.

C.  Budget.  In one (additional) page max, itemize your estimated funding needs.

D.  Other sources of funding.  In one (additional) page max, please indicate all other possible sources of funding to which you have (or are) applying, and the amount(s) requested.  Please indicate what your Stanford advisors are contributing.

The application deadline is April 28, 2008 by 5:00 pm.   Awards will be announced the week of May 12, 2008, after the McGee/Levorsen awards are announced, so we can take into account funding received from those sources.
