PhD Application Procedure

(updated September 16, 2008)

IPER accepts PhD applicants for full time study beginning Autumn quarter each year. Applications and all supporting documents must be received by 11:59 p.m. PST on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. Due to IPER's tight review schedule, this deadline is final and documents (including letters of recommendation, transcripts and GRE/TOEFL scores) received after the deadline will not be considered. Applicants are strongly encouraged to take the GRE and TOEFL, if required, no later than September 2008 to ensure their scores are reported by the December 2 deadline.

Prospective applicants should read through IPER's PhD FAQs and Stanford's Graduate Admissions site for important policies and deadlines. All applicants to Stanford's graduate programs must apply electronically; the required University electronic application form is available in the Guide to Graduate Admission. If you cannot apply electronically, follow the instructions in the Guide. An application fee of $105 must be paid before the application can be submitted. Applicants from the US may be eligible for a fee waiver - read more here.

In early January 2009, finalists will be invited to attend an on-campus site visit on February 12 and 13, at Stanford's expense. Finalists will interview with several faculty members and meet current IPER students and staff. Offers of admission will be extended in March 2009.

APPLICATION MATERIALS AND SUBMISSION

IPER has a two-stage application process: once you have submitted your electronic Stanford application, you must complete your application in the School of Earth Sciences' (SES) Admissions Database, following the instructions in Step 6 below.

Step 1 - Stanford Electronic Application Submit your application electronically through Stanford's Graduate Admissions page, following the instructions here and in the Graduate Admissions Guide.

Your Statement of Purpose (2 single spaced pages maximum) should describe your academic and professional preparation for IPER, why you are seeking an interdisciplinary graduate program, and how your research will integrate traditional disciplines. While faculty sponsorship is not required for application purposes, the Statement of Purpose should identify 2-4 Stanford faculty members with whom you would like to work.

Step 2 -Supplementary Materials Submit IPER's Application Summary Form, required in addition to the standard application in Step 1, to the Supplementary Materials section of your Stanford application (download form).

Step 3 - GRE and TOEFL Scores Request that ETS send your GRE scores (verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing required), and TOEFL scores if required, directly to Stanford using the general code 4704 (IPER does not have a specific department code). Students are strongly advised to take the GRE and TOEFL no later than September 2008 to ensure scores are transmitted by the December 2 application deadline.

Step 4 - Letters of Recommendation Request that your three letters of recommendations be submitted electronically by the December 2, 2008 deadline, following the instructions here. If letters cannot be submitted electronically via the application database, they may be sent by the letter writer in a signed, sealed envelope directly to IPER at the address below, and must be received by the deadline.

Step 5 - Transcripts Request that official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended full time for at least one year be mailed directly to IPER at the address below, to be received by the December 2, 2008 deadline.

Step 6 - SES Admissions Database Materials submitted electronically (Stanford application, letters of recommendation, GRE/TOEFL scores, IPER Application Summary Form) will automatically be uploaded to the SES Admissions Database. However, to complete your application, you must upload a plain text version of your Statement of Purpose, identical to the one you submitted in Step 1 above, and your transcripts.

Complete your application by December 2, 2008 in the SES Admissions Database by following the instructions below:

  • access the SES Admissions Database
  • enter the e-mail address you put on your application into the specified field
  • wait up to 30 minutes to receive an e-mail with a one-time link
  • upload your plain text Statement of Purpose and PDFs of your unofficial transcripts, each as a single PDF in English

Note that you must wait 1-2 days after submitting your electronic Stanford application to submit your materials into the SES Admissions Database. If the Database does not recognize your login after you have waited two days, please contact IPERadmissions@stanford.edu.

You may check the receipt status of your application components after uploading your Statement and transcripts. To upload documents and request receipt status updates more than once, you must re-enter the database, following the instructions above, to receive a new one-time link.

If you have any questions about the application materials or process, send an e mail clearly stating your problem or question to IPERadmissions@stanford.edu.

Once you have completed your application, please do not contact IPER to ask if your application is complete. You will be contacted as soon as possible if an item has not been received.
