THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL GEOPHYSICS

The analyses of geophysical data and observations are highly dependent on efficient and rapid numerical computations. As a result, computers play an important role for attacking research problems in a large number of areas. Some examples are: 1) the construction of 3D and 4D images of the earth's interior; 2) modeling wave propagation in complex media; 3) travel-time tomography; and 4) geophysical inverse problems. Further details can be found at the links Stanford Center for Computational Earth & Environmental Sciences (CEES), Stanford Exploration Project (SEP), Stanford Wave Physics Lab (SWP), Earthquake Seismology, and Crustal Deformation and Fault Mechanics and the faculty links Jon Claerbout, Biondo Biondi, Paul Segall, Greg Beroza, Jerry Harris and Mark Zoback.
