This AGU award was established by our section in 2008
and will be given every year to an outstanding young seismologist who is within 3 years of receiving his/her Ph.D. Your officers, together with an “ad hoc” committee (4 other seismologists) selected David Shelly from a very strong slate of nominations. We will present this award just
before the Gutenberg lecture (see below). David Shelly is a recent Stanford graduate and is now a Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow at the USGS in Menlo Park. He has performed groundbreaking work in the study of deep tremor and low frequency earthquakes.
Justin Brown won a Seismological Society of America outstanding student presentation award. Mark Zoback awarded the 2008 AGU Walter H. Bucher medal Professor Mark Zoback has been selected as the 2008 AGU Walter H. Bucher medalist. This medal is awarded "for original contributions to the knowledge of Earth's crust". The presentation of this medal will be made at Honors Ceremony at the 2008 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco on 17th of December, 2008.
Congratulations! Simon Klemperer awarded 2008 Cox Medal for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research Marianne Karplus was selected to receive a three-year NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Mariana Karplus was selected to receive a three-year NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. She is one of the three people in the country to receive this Fellowship. Congratulations! Jolene Robin-McCaskill Receives SMART Scholarship Jolene Robin-McCaskill has been awarded a scholarship under the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation Program (SMART). From a competitive field of over 2,000 applicants, approximately 200 awards were made. SMART is managed by the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) on behalf of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) works with NPS to administer the program. Congratulations to Jolene! Justin Brown receives 2007 AGU Fall Meeting Outstanding Student Paper Award Justin Brown was selected to receive an Outstanding Student Paper Award for your presentation at the 2007 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California. Congratulations! His presentation was recognized as among the best of a strong group of student presenters, which sets an example for his fellow students and the entire AGU membership.

Hannah Ross, With John Runge, received Best Student Paper Award, AAPG Rocky Mountain Section
