Graduation: Rules for the Last Steps
You must be registered during the quarter in which you defend. This can often be as TGR (Terminal Graduate Registration). To go TGR requires that you have at least 10.5 units of residency, have fulfilled all university and department requirements, and have submitted your signed Reading Committee form (PDF file) to the department. You cannot graduate until you have turned in your finished thesis to the university. It is not enough to successfully complete your defense - you must also submit your final product to the university. Any holds against you initiated by the Registrar's Office must be cleared. If you have defended in one quarter, but need more time to submit your final thesis, you may request that the university grant you a "grace period" to finish. This means that for that last quarter, you do not have to register or pay tuition. A form must be filed with the Registrar's Office to petition this. If you know you will finish your thesis in Summer or Fall at the latest, you may petition to "walk-through" (PDF file) in the June graduation ceremonies. In whatever quarter you feel you are ready to graduate, you must file your Intention to Graduate in AXESS. Your name can be pulled from the final graduation list at the last minute. If your name is pulled because you realize you won't be ready until the following quarter, you must file your Intention to Graduate again in that quarter. Only you can file your intention to graduate. Please feel free to contact Tara Ilich, Student Services Director, with any questions.
