The GES Minor

In order to complete a minor in Geological and Environmental Sciences, students must

The variety of courses that can satisfy the minor requirements should make it possible for students with a wide range of interests and backgrounds to complete a GES minor. Up to 3 units of Stanford Introductory Seminars in GES (courses numbered 29-59) may be used to fulfill the 12-unit elective requirement for minors, and all students pursuing a minor in GES are encouraged to participate in the GES Senior Seminar (GES 150).

Minor core course sequence

Complete all of the following (12-13 units)
GES 1 Dynamic Earth 4 units
  or GES 49N Field trip to Death Valley 3 units
GES 2 Earth System History 3 units
GES 102 Earth Materials 5 units

Minor electives

Complete a minimum of 12 additional units in GES from the following list
GES 8 The Oceans: An Introduction to the Marine Environment 3 units
GES 90 Introduction to Geochemistry 3-4 units
GES 103 Rocks in Thin Section 2 units
GES 110 Structural Geology and Tectonics 5 units
  or GES 111a Fundamentals of Structural Geology 3 units
GES 130 Environmental Earth Sciences I 3 units
GES 131 Environmental Earth Sciences II 3 units
GES 144 Fundamentals of GIS 4 units
GES 151 Sedimentary Geology and Petrography 4 units
GES 152 Stratigraphy and Applied Paleontology 4 units
GES 170 Environmental Geochemistry 4 units
GES 175 Science of Soils 4 units
GES 180 Igneous Processes 3-4 units
GES 181 Metamorphic Processes 3-4 units
GES 185 Volcanology 3 units
