Courses in GES
 |
| Students in GES 47N look for secrets in the mud |
Courses in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences cover
a broad range of topics, from earth surface processes to the marine environment
to geographic information systems and earth history. Stanford's location
near the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay, the Sierra Nevada, and the
San Andreas fault provides an excellent opportunity for field studies,
and many courses in GES take advantage of that opportunity.
Here are a few of the courses available in GES:
The following courses have no prerequisites and are a great way to get
started in GES:
| GES 1 |
Dynamic Earth (Aut, Spr) |
4 units |
| |
Topics include processes that shape the earth's landforms, produce
the minerals and rocks that comprise the earth, create soils, deform
the earth's crust, and move continents; surficial processes involving
wind, water, and ice; global circulation in the atmosphere and ocean
and global climate; geologic hazards like earthquakes and volcanoes;
and non-renewable resources. Includes hands-on labs and several field
trips. |
|
|
| GES 2 |
Earth System History (Win) |
3 units |
| |
An overview of how the universe evolved from the creation of the
elements to the origin of humans. Includes the origin of the unvierse,
our solar system, and Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and continents,
the origin and evolution of life, and future scenarios for earth. |
|
|
| GES 3 |
Current Topics in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (Aut, Win) |
1 unit |
| |
This seminar provides an introduction to the breadth of research areas within the Earth and environmental sciences at Stanford. Each week, a faculty member will present his or her research in a talk geared towards the student with little or no background, leaving plenty of time for questions. Faculty lecturers come from all of the programs and departments in the School of Earth Sciences: Earth Systems, Energy Resources Engineering, Geological and Environmental Sciences, and Geophysics. S/NC only |
|
|
| GES 8 |
The Oceans: An Introduction to the Marine Environment
(Spr, Sum) |
3 units |
| |
Topics include topography and geology of the seafloor, evolution
of ocean basins, the circulation of the ocean and atmosphere, the
nature of sea water, waves, tides, and the history of major ocean
basins. The interface between continents and ocean basins, emphasizing
estuaries, beaches, and continental shelves with California margin
examples. Includes a one-day field trip to the beach. |

Field trips in GES (Aut, Win, Spr, Sum) |
1 unit |
| |
Several times throughout the year, faculty lead multi-day field trips for which students can receive credit. For more information about past and current field trip opportunities, see the GES 191/291 page. |
