My research group and I study the physical chemistry of geological and technological materials, especially silicate and oxide minerals, glasses, high temperature melts, ceramics, and catalysts such as zeolites. We design and make measurements of physical and chemical properties, and determine atomic-scale structure and dynamics with techniques such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and other types of spectroscopy. Our ultimate goal is to provide quantitative data to better constrain models of processes in geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and in the processing and forming of glassy and crystalline inorganic materials.
