Facilities in Energy Resources Engineering

This image is a CT dry scan of a core from Geysers well MLM-3. The colors show differing porosity and/or rock type. The blue bar most likely represents a region accessed by a fracture, while the red area is a low porosity zone.

Stanford University is one of the world's most highly regarded institutions of higher education with a strong reputation in earth sciences and engineering. The Department of Energy Resources Engineering has traditionally been ranked high (often first) in surveys of program and student quality.

The Green Earth Sciences Building is close to the center of campus. New laboratories support research in steam injection, gas flooding, phase behavior, reservoir characterization and geothermal engineering. Students have access to a variety of computers for research and course work, including workstations, microcomputers and supercomputers on and off campus. Among the experimental equipment in the department are an X-ray CT scanner, a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer.

The Department maintains close ties with major oil companies throughout the world and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Our research programs, including student support, are funded through DOE grants and contributions from industrial affiliates. Seven industrial affiliates programs support research in the department. Many companies belong to more than one program, providing $1.5 million annually in external research funding. DOE support is currently $1.9 million per year.
