A rich selection of scientific challenges awaits graduate students in Energy Resources Engineering. The department has nine full-time faculty and 63 graduate students with backgrounds in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, petroleum engineering, geophysics, geology, physics, civil engineering, environmental engineering, computer science, mathematics and mechanical engineering. Our main research interests are the fundamentals of flow through porous media, geostatistics to represent geological heterogeneity, improved techniques for reservoir simulation, horizontal wells, heavy oil recovery, well test analysis, geothermal energy and reservoir optimization. Our ultimate research goals are to improve recovery from oil, gas and geothermal fields, and to solve problems in containment transport and water resources. At the moment, more than half of our graduate students are in the PhD program, and of those PhD students, 40% are women.
